A rectifier-transformer, often known as a TR unit or TRU, is an electrical device that converts AC (alternating current) into DC (direct current) while also adjusting the voltage level. It combines two distinct electrical components into one integrated system to provide stable DC power from a standard AC grid.

Key Components

Transformer: Alters the incoming AC voltage level, either stepping it up or down.

Rectifier: Converts the modified AC power into DC power.

Filter System: Mitigates ripples to provide clean and stable DC.

Control Unit: Regulates the output voltage or current as needed.

How it Works

Voltage Transformation: High-voltage AC from the grid enters the primary coil of the transformer. The transformer either steps this voltage down or up to the specific level required for the application.

Rectification: The modified AC power then goes into the rectifier circuit, typically employing solid-state diodes or thyristors. These components act as one-way valves, allowing current to flow in only one direction, which converts the AC into pulsating DC.

Filtering: The pulsating DC passes through capacitors and inductors. This process smooths out the electrical peaks and troughs, resulting in a stable, continuous DC output.

Aviation: Converts aircraft power from 115 VAC to 28 VDC for onboard electronics.
