A 5 kVA single-phase isolation transformer (220 VAC input / 36 VAC output) is 

an electrical safety device that transfers 5,000 Volt-Amps of alternating current power while physically separating the input and output circuits.

 It lowers dangerous 220 VAC utility voltage down to a safe 36 VAC level, preventing electrical shocks by eliminating a direct path to the ground.
