A NiCd battery charger, meaning a Nickel Cadmium battery charger, is an electronic device that controls current and voltage, designed to safely charge rechargeable batteries or battery packs with NiCd chemistry. For NiCd batteries to have a long service life, the charger's output values, i.e., the rectifier, must be precisely adjusted according to the battery's amp-hour capacity and the number of cells.
How does a NiCd battery charger work?
Due to their composition, NiCd batteries require constant current charging. The charging process consists of the following stages and principles:
Constant Current Phase: The charger maintains a constant current until the battery is charged. The battery voltage gradually increases during the charging process.
Cell Voltage Monitoring: The nominal voltage of NiCd cells is approximately 1.2 volts. During charging, this voltage reaches 1.4V to 1.45V per cell.
Charge Termination Methods, Delta V: When NiCd batteries reach full charge, a slight voltage drop occurs. Smart chargers terminate charging or switch to float charge mode when a -ΔV curve, i.e., negative voltage delta, is detected.
Temperature Monitoring, ΔT / Δt: Fully charged NiCd batteries begin to convert energy into heat. Safe devices detect a sudden rise in temperature and cut off the current.
How should the rectifier output be according to the battery's amp-hour capacity?
There is a direct mathematical relationship between the amp-hour capacity of NiCd batteries and the output current (amperes) and voltage (volts) values in an industrial rectifier.
The Final Result
To charge a NiCd battery, the rectifier must have a constant current mode, the output current must be set to 10% of the battery's amp-hour capacity (i.e., 0.1C), and the total output voltage must be determined so that it does not exceed the number of series-connected cells × 1.42 V.
