A transformer rectifier, often known as a TR unit or TRU, is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) while adjusting the voltage level. It combines two distinct electrical components into one integrated system to provide stable DC power from a standard AC mains supply.

Key Components

Transformer: Changes the level of incoming AC voltage, either stepping it up or down.

Rectifier: Converts the adjusted AC power into DC power.

Filtering System: Reduces ripples to provide a clean and stable DC output.

Control Unit: Regulates the output voltage or current as needed.

How It Works

Voltage Transformation: High-voltage AC from the mains enters the transformer's primary coil. The transformer steps this voltage down or up to the specific level required for the application.

Rectification: The adjusted AC power then goes into the rectifier circuit, typically using solid-state diodes or thyristors. These components act as one-way valves, allowing current to flow in only one direction, converting the AC into pulsating DC.

Filtering: The pulsating DC then passes through capacitors and inductors. This process smooths out the electrical peaks and troughs, resulting in a stable, continuous DC output.
